Gareth Mills,
Managing Director

Gareth has over 25 years’ experience in the Energy and Utilities industry. He started his career as an economic adviser to the UK government on energy related issues, before progressing through senior regulatory and commercial roles at National Grid, Yorkshire Water, British Nuclear Fuels and Northern Gas Networks.

Gareth joined N-Gen to take up the role of Managing Director in 2023. He has a BA (Hons) Economics and MSc Energy Economics degree from the University of Surrey.

Tim Harwood
Operations Director

Tim is N-Gen’s Operations Director, overseeing the safe and efficient operation of assets. He led Northern Gas Networks’ hydrogen programme and has directed projects including the H21 programme, which carried out pioneering research into a hydrogen gas conversion, Hydrogen Home, HyDeploy blending and proposals for village and town trials of 100% hydrogen.

Tim has 45 years experience in the UK gas industry, covering a wide range of operational and project roles across all pressure ranges and asset types, including distribution and transmission. Previously working in National Grid Transmission, Tim held a number of senior roles as pipeline engineer, project delivery engineer and engineering manager. In a long career he has also held a number of operational roles within gas distribution, covering pressure control and storage, mains replacement and emergency response.

Charles Woghiren
Director of Engineering

Charles is a chartered engineer and member of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE). He has over 20 years’ experience across related industries including Oil and Gas, LNG and Water. Prior to joining N-Gen, he worked in a broad range of technical, managerial and leadership roles in engineering and asset management. His most recent roles were Head of Engineering Delivery and Head of Asset Reliability, both in the Water sector. He’s motivated by seeking out solutions to challenges and driving business efficiency, which he has successfully achieved several times through the course of his career.

Charles focuses on supporting the delivery of safe operating activities and ensuring hydrogen is supplied efficiently and reliably to our customers.

 

Jaymes Mackay
Chief Strategy & Market Development Officer

Jaymes has more than 15 years experience across the UK energy sector, working in the public sector, private sector and consulting. His career spans strategy, policy, commercial transactions and business development, with a particular focus on the energy transition.

Prior to joining N-Gen, Jaymes was a Partner at KPMG, leading the ENR Strategy and Transformation practice, advising clients on the commercial, regulatory and strategic challenges of decarbonisation. He has also worked within the in-house advisory team at BEIS (now DESNZ), supporting Ministers and senior officials on the commercial aspects of energy policymaking. Earlier in his career, Jaymes held a range of roles at Drax Group across risk, power trading, strategy and business development.

Hayley Benstead
Project Planner and Document Control

Hayley is N-Gen’s Project Document Controller and Project Planner, supporting projects across the business by managing document control processes and ensuring compliance with company standards and regulations. She also coordinates external documentation reviews. 

Before joining N-Gen in 2024, Hayley started her career as a business apprentice, working in HR and recruitment before moving to a senior administration role at an archaeology company.

Imani Francis
Business Management Lead

Imani works on N-Gen’s policy work, governance and compliance, with a responsibility for implementing new business processes and streamlining existing procedures. He is also involved in contract management.

Before joining N-Gen in 2024, Imani worked on the East Coast Hydrogen project for NGN co-ordinating various aspects of the scheme, having fulfilled a similar role for an Occupational Health company.

Jane Herbert
Head of Marketing and Communications

Jane leads the organisation’s marketing strategy and communications. She plays a key role in promoting N-Gen’s achievements, managing media relations, supporting business development, and driving communications for active projects.

Jane joined N-Gen in 2024, bringing extensive experience in the utilities and energy sectors. She spent a decade in communications at a major water company and four years at Northern Gas Networks (NGN), where she led communications for the hydrogen research programme.

She holds a business degree, a Chartered Institute of Marketing qualification, a Postgraduate Diploma in Management, and an Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM) Level 5 Award in Leadership.

Karen Sroda
Business Administrator

Karen provides key administrative support to the core team, senior team and project team. She is responsible for the day to day running of the office, producing meeting minutes and progress reports and planning meetings and events. She also assists the senior executive team members with diary management and administration.

Karen is highly experienced, having worked in global office sectors, including in banking for 24 years and healthcare equipment manufacturing for 10 years.  Her previous roles span a range of disciplines including customer service, operational, technical (regulatory) and project office, giving her extensive skills in planning, organisation and communication.

Russ Oxley
Head of SHEQ

Russ is the Head of Safety, Health, Environment and Quality (SHEQ) at N-Gen, where he leads the company’s approach to safety, compliance, environmental performance, and continual improvement. He is responsible for developing N-Gen’s SHEQ strategy and governance framework, supporting the safe and sustainable operation assets.

With more than 33 years of experience in the gas and energy industries, Russ began his career as a British Gas apprentice before moving into the energy futures sector in 2016. There, he supported research and development programmes focused on building the safety case for more sustainable energy technologies and infrastructure. Russ joined N-Gen in 2024 and now leads the company’s SHEQ framework, helping to protect people, the environment, assets, and reputation as the business continues to grow.

Ryan Mallinder
Head of Operations and Maintenance

Ryan leads the development of N-Gen’s operations and maintenance strategy and provides owner-side oversight across assets. His role focuses on ensuring assets are operated safely, compliantly and efficiently, while driving performance and managing operational risk in collaboration with asset managers and maintenance providers.

Ryan has over 15 years of experience in the energy industry, working in operational roles across gas distribution and local transmission networks. His experience includes emergency response, network repair and replacement, pipelines, pressure reduction and the development of operational strategies and delivery models.

He has spent the past six years working in hydrogen, including leading the construction and testing phase of the H21 Phase 2a research programme—the UK’s first off-grid gas network operating with 100% hydrogen. More recently, he led the development of the operations and maintenance model for a large-scale hydrogen production plant.

 

 

Thomas Veale
Project Engineer

Thomas is a Project Engineer with an MEng in Chemical Engineering and Chemistry from the University of Sheffield.

He provides technical and engineering support across N-Gen’s  portfolio, drawing on experience in hydrogen technologies, chemical and process engineering, process safety, asset management, wind energy, and biogas-to-power systems. His role combines engineering analysis with intelligent client responsibilities, ensuring technical work is robust, proportionate, and aligned with project objectives, industry standards, and regulatory requirements.

Thomas contributes to project delivery, technical studies, technology assessments, engineering reviews, computational modelling, process safety activities, and asset management initiatives, supporting informed investment, operational, and strategic decision-making. He is passionate about delivering safe, reliable, and sustainable engineering solutions that balance technical performance, risk, and commercial value.

 

Widya Siswanto
Market Development Manager

Widya is working in the Project and Business Development space at N-Gen, scanning the market to identify and develop our next projects. 

Widya is a Chemical Engineer, specialising in process safety. She joined N-Gen following eight years working in low carbon hydrogen, and previously in the oil and gas industry. Notably, she was the engineering lead for Dolphyn, an off shore hydrogen production project, where she was involved from project origination through to the Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) stage.
