Electrical Engineer

THIS ROLE IS NOW CLOSED TO NEW APPLICANTS

We have a fantastic opportunity for a detail driven Electrical Engineer (Hydrogen Plant – HV/LV, Asset Management & Reliability) to join our close knit, dynamic team at N-Gen and act as the electrical technical authority for a new hydrogen facility. You’ll own Electrical Safety Rules and HV/LV authorisations, lead statutory compliance across EAWR and BS 7671, and embed hazardous area controls (DSEAR/ATEX/UKEX, IEC/BS EN 60079) while lifting reliability through  RCM/FMEA and data driven defect elimination. If powering safe, compliant, future ready hydrogen operations excites you, we’d love to hear from you today.

Key responsibilities:

  • Lead statutory electrical compliance (EAWR, DSEAR/UKEX, BS 7671).
  • Manage HV/LV authorisation schemes and safe systems of work (permits, isolation, earthing).
  • Oversee HV/LV design, protection settings, switching procedures and commissioning.
  • Deliver hazardous area classification (Zone 1/2) and specify compliant Ex equipment.
  • Integrate electrical safety into hydrogen electrolysers and fuelling systems (interlocks, E‑stops, detection).
  • Maintain DSEAR controls, Ex-inspection regimes and site compliance documentation.
  • Develop and maintain asset registers, protection databases and single‑line diagrams.
  • Provide technical assurance across design, installation, testing and energisation.
  • Support operational fault response, relay analysis and load/energy optimisation.
  • Lead Management of Change and keep drawings, settings and Ex dossiers up to date.
  • Develop electrical training and competence (HV switching, 18th Edition, CompEx).
  • Contribute to asset strategies, maintenance planning and capex/opex forecasting.

Knowledge & technical know-how:

  • Electrical law and guidance: EAWR 1989 (HSR25), safe working practices (HSG85).
  • Wiring rules: BS 7671 (18th Ed., current amendments) for design, erection and verification.
  • Explosive atmospheres: DSEAR; equipment selection/installation/inspection to IEC/BS EN 60079; UKEX/ATEX product duties.
  • Construction phase: CDM 2015 roles and deliverables for design/installation/commissioning.

Skills and Experience:

  • HV/LV design review (protection coordination, earthing, arc flash risk reduction), Ex equipment specification, and BS 7671 verification.
  • Leadership of electrical safe systems (permits, isolation, sanction for test) and competency/authorisation programs aligned to HSG85/EAWR.
  • DSEAR assessments focusing on electrical ignition sources and HAC deliverables (drawings, inspection/test plans).
  • Minimum of 3 years in heavy industry, power, oil & gas, chemicals or hydrogen with HV/LV responsibility and Ex installations.
  • Demonstrable delivery of maintenance strategies, reliability improvements and safe commissioning/energisation programmes.
  • Prior role as Authorised Person (HV/LV) or involvement with an Authorising Engineer scheme.

Qualifications:

  • Degree (BEng/BSc) in Electrical/Electronic Engineering (or related).
  • BS 7671 (18th Edition) qualification (e.g., C&G 2382).
  • Desirable: HV Switching/Protection courses; Authorised Person (HV/LV); Authorising Engineer training; CompEx Ex01–Ex04 (or equivalent); DSEAR assessor training; NEBOSH Process Safety (or similar); CDM duty holder awareness.

You must have a legal right to work in the UK, be available to work in Leeds, have hands‑on experience acting as an electrical technical authority or similar role on HV/LV industrial or process sites, have previously worked with or managed Electrical Safety Rules, HV/LV authorisations or safe systems of work (e.g., permits, isolation), have demonstrable experience complying with EAWR and BS 7671 in an operational environment and been directly involved in hazardous area compliance (DSEAR/ATEX/UKEX) and selection/inspection of Ex equipment?
