Bradford Council announces ‘Clean Air Zone’

Bradford

Background
In 2022, Bradford City Council announced a city-wide ‘Clean Air Zone’. In order to help achieve this target, and to reduce its carbon emissions, the Council started working with N-Gen and other partners (Ryze Hydrogen and Hygen) to explore the possibility of building a renewable energy hub within Bradford.

“Bradford’s ‘state of the art’ multi modal zero carbon fuelling station with a training and development centre will help Bradford achieve its goal of creating a clean air zone by supporting the transition from petrol and diesel-fuelled vehicles to hydrogen-fuelled vehicles.”

The project
N-Gen identified Bradford’s ‘state of the art’ multi modal zero carbon fuelling station with a training and development centre, a site formerly operated by Northern Gas Networks, as a viable location. The hub will produce up to 21 tonnes of hydrogen per day (46.5 Mega Watts per year) and will facilitate hydrogen refuelling, electric vehicle charging and hydrogen gas peaking. The project will provide 9 dispensers for refuelling buses and other heavy vehicles, 6 dispensers for refuelling cars, 6 dispensers for off-site delivery and 9 tonnes of on-site hydrogen storage. The site will also include an education centre for training and skills development.

Anchor Customers
Demand for hydrogen means that the project is supported by several key partners.

  • First Bus and TLC. With a bus depot 500 metres away from the site, First Bus is excited about the potential for renewable fuelling within the city.
  • JCB. JCB will bring its hydrogen combustion engine to market in 2023 and looks forward to taking advantage of the fuelling facility.
  • Solenis. A speciality chemicals company with a large manufacturing plant in Bradford, Solenis operates its site using two Combined Heat and Power unit plants capable of using hydrogen, which will be supported by Bradford’s ‘state of the art’ multi modal zero carbon fuelling station with a training and development centre..

Impacts
Bradford’s ‘state of the art’  multi modal zero carbon fuelling station with a training and development centre will help Bradford achieve its goal of creating a clean air zone by supporting the transition from petrol and diesel-fuelled vehicles to hydrogen-fuelled vehicles. Located in the city centre, the hub will raise the public’s awareness of hydrogen as an alternative fuel source, driving interest and adoption of this clean energy – a process supported by the education centre. And by powering green energy to local businesses capable of operating with hydrogen the project will help mitigate peak energy demands on the national grid.
